Applying For Membership

The Bowery Gallery is a co-operative gallery, wholly run by its artist members. Our mission is to exhibit work of the highest quality from independent artists. The gallery considers new members in periodic reviews when current members leave. New members are selected and accepted by a majority vote based on viewings of the artist’s original work, however websites will be previewed at our regularly scheduled meetings (Sept.-May).

Some of the benefits of membership include: no commission to the gallery on the sale of artworks, representation by an art gallery in Chelsea, New York, participation in art fairs, the ability to sell your artworks on Artsy, a web presence on the membership page, opportunity to curate exhibitions, supportive community of artist members who visit each other’s studios and exhibitions, knowledge of managing an artist-run gallery.

There is a membership fee for members. Everyone participates fully in the business of running the gallery; each member has at least one job, must gallery sit (paid sitters are available) and attend a minimum of 2 meetings a year. All members have solo exhibitions every 2-1/2 to 3 years and participate in occasional group shows. While members are responsible for the printing and mailing of announcements as well as refreshments for receptions, there are no commissions on sales.

The Bowery Gallery encourages artists living in and within 200 miles of NYC to apply for membership as a full working member. Artists applying who live outside of the 200 mile range of NYC will only be considered as non-working members. Invitational slots in June and July are offered to artists from outside the area who reside in the U.S. Please note the gallery does not exhibit photography or digital art.
