Bowery Gallery has been showing contemporary art of the highest quality for more than six decades. Bowery Gallery is a cooperative, founded by artists and directed by the collective decision making of its member artists. From its beginnings, Bowery Gallery has been a force for the expansion of art's traditions in a venue unconstrained by commercial pressures. Named after its original location, Bowery Gallery is now located in the heart of the Chelsea art district.
In 1969, a group of eighteen adventurous young male and female New York artists, looking around the contemporary art world and thinking back to the 10th Street days of the 1950s, founded a new coop gallery, located on the Bowery which gave the space its name. In 1972 the gallery moved to Greene Street, in 1980 to Wooster Street, in 2000 we moved to 25th Street in Chelsea and now we are in our present space 547 West 27th St, Suite 508, NYC.
Exhibitions at the Bowery Gallery have received notice in The New York Times, Arts, Art in America, Modern Painters, ARTnews, Artcritical.com, Vogue, The New Criterion, The New York Sun, The Observer and The New Republic. A national competition, sponsored by the gallery in August, has been juried by such notable artists as Nell Blaine, Louis Finkelstein, Lois Dodd, Rosemary Beck, Natalie Charkow, Jane Freilicher, Gabriel Laderman, Art critic Lance Esplund, Janet Fish, Wilbur Niewald, William Bailey, Bill Jensen, John Walker, Paul Resika, Rackstraw Downes, art critic Jed Perl, Joan Snyder, art historian and critic Martica Sawin, and Kyle Staver.
