Nicole Maynard-Sahar
Painting with Intention
April 25 - May 20, 2017
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 29, 3-6pm

Words are inadequate to describe taste and touch. Musical phrases convey specific meaning as we listen but then we can only speak about them in generalities. Painting is the medium in which I think, through which I feel, and with which I communicate. My work is and is meant to be nonverbal until the moment one must put it into words. In the formation of this statement, I can say that my paintings communicate visual, sensory, and cognitive phenomena, evoking information gleaned from the natural world. Color, texture, and marks are the vocabulary. I struggle to bend them to match my perceptions. I search for the simplest form that is the essence of what I mean. I manipulate paint to find substance.

“I met a seer,
Passing the hues and objects of the world,
The fields of art and learning, pleasure, sense,
To glean eidólons…

Ever the mutable,
Ever materials, changing, crumbling, re-cohering,
Ever the ateliers, the factories divine
Issuing eidólons.”

- Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass
