By Way of Water

July 9 – 27, 2019

Opening Reception: 5–8 pm on Thursday, July 11, 2019

Closing Reception: 4–6 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2019

In her new invitational installation at the Bowery Gallery, Moira Bateman presents abstractions from microscopic study of lake bottom sediments, including diatoms in waxed cloth assemblages created with natural waterway and sediment-stained silk from Minnesota’s bogs, rivers, wetlands and lakes.

Bateman is a contemporary visual artist living in Minneapolis. In this exhibition, she invokes a variety of methods to dye swaths of silk using the tannins and sediment found in natural waterways, allowing the stain to seep into the cloth over time. The pieces are further worked with other mixed media including hand stitching and beeswax to create abstract works of art.

Bateman completed a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of Minnesota, with a dual concentration in Landscape Ecology and Studio Art.
